Standard 1: Know students and how they learn

1.2.1 Understand how students learn

As an educator it is crucial to understand that each child is unique in their own way, meaning that students may learn, react and engage to content differently. In order to meet the diverse learning needs of all students, a teacher needs to know their students and the various form of teaching and learning strategies that work for their classroom. Standard 1.2 of the AISTL focuses primarily on a teachers knowledge and understanding of their students way of learning (AISTL, 2022). This standard was prevalent in both of my placements as in the first week of observation it was obvious the difference in the way my year 6 class engaged in learning in relation to the year 1 students. The younger students reacted well to a more teacher directed approach to learning as they required more guidance and assistance in all forms of classroom work. Whereas on the other hand, the year 6 students required a learner centred approach which developed individual management and responsibility towards all tasks.

Artefact 1 is feedback from my supervising teachers regarding my current progress in understanding each student and developing further goals to incorporate teaching strategies and lessons that meet diverse student needs. Knowing students and how they learn is the foundation of student teacher development in trust and results in an equal and democratic classroom environment where each individual feels valued (Gillespie, M. 2005).

Artefact 2: Lesson plan of 'I do, We do, You do' approach

Artefact 2 are the lesson plans I created for my younger students that follows the ‘I do, we do, you do’ approach to learning which stimulates the impressionable young minds to gradually gain understanding and responsibility towards tasks. Within both of my placements I have developed my understanding of the importance of student specific lessons as each individual, class and year group learn in a unique means.
