2.6.1 Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

 

Standard 2.6 Incorporating information and communication technology (ICT) into the classroom to expand learning opportunities is a high priority within my own teaching practices (AISTL, 2022). As technology is constantly evolving it is our job as educators to keep up with the developments and find new and engaging ways to incorporate ICT into the classroom. In my recent placements, I have incorporated many forms of ICT such as Nearpods, Google Slides, Kahoot, YouTube and interactive mathematics websites. In my experience, students responded well towards a combination of ICT and non-ICT strategies as both provided students with the opportunity to be hands-on and involved in all tasks. Both of my practicum supervising teachers were very resourceful and provided me with numerous examples of ICT that I have and will be using in my future classroom. Artefact 1 is feedback from my first-year supervising teacher, expressing my successful use of interactive websites that engaged the students to participate. Although some educators believe ICT is not necessary and is detrimental to students’ development, I believe it is a great asset when used correctly with a mixture of non-technological related resources such as worksheets, textbooks and exercise books. ICT encourages educators to alter their teaching and learning style as it develops new pedagogical content knowledge (Donnelly, D. 2011).

Artefact 1: Feedback

Artefact 2: Maths Playground website

Artefact 2 is an interactive website called ‘Maths Playground’. I use this website frequently with younger students as it has an abundance of interactive online worksheets and games that as a class the students will take turns using on the smartboard. I specifically used the interactive number chart to assist the younger children in group work when initially working on multiplication and number patterns as it is a clear representation.
