Standard 6: Engage in professional learning

6.3.1 Engage with colleagues and improve practice.

Standard 6.3, Engage with colleagues and improve practice has been a crucial standard that I have implemented within all of my placement experiences. As a pre-service teacher, the knowledge and experience of these mentors and qualified educators positively impacts on my formative stages of learning to lead to productivity and success within the classroom (Hudson, P. 2016). Before and after certain lessons, I would meet with my supervising teacher as well as the other teachers in the grade to gain feedback and tips to improve many of my lesson plans. Whilst working closely with a variety of experienced teachers, confidence in my own learning was constantly evolving as well as my creative approach to teaching in the classroom.

Artefact 1: Nearpod lesson

Artefact 1, is a mathematics lesson focused on number and algebra and measurement and geography. This lesson plan was evolved in conjunction with another teacher to form a creative yet practical approach to mathematics ensuring the engagement of all students. After viewing artefact 1, I then created a lesson which was based upon the idea of the beach shack lesson. Although the two lesson were similar, the lesson I created held the improvements and feedback expressed from my mentor teacher. Through interaction and engagement between pre-service teachers and qualified professionals can address certain constructive feedback regards pedagogical limitations and solutions for self-reflection and growth (Hudson, P. 2016). As this placement experience was at the conclusion of the year, this lesson plan was created to assess the student’s overall mathematics knowledge. Piagets constructivist theory was incorporated into the discussion and creation of these artefacts with the combination of students prior knowledge and experiences learn outside of the classroom through play (Harlow, S. 2007).
